Windows crashes constantly

I'm having a reoccuring problem with Windows XP, which is
Windows explorer just randomly crashing. Sometimes it
crashes right when it opens, sometimes it crashes when I
select a different folder, usually a folder with a lot of
items, like "My Documents". I noticed it was predictably
crashing when I opened a folder with a bunch of digital
photos (and directories) in "My Pictures", so I moved
that directory to the hard drive so I could open it. Up
until then it was crashing so regularly that I was
mystified how this problem hadn't been caught before.

Just now, explorer crashed when I accessed the Programs
menu from the Start button. I know it's a crash because
it hides the taskbar for a second while it's thinking,
then rebuilds it with any instances of Explorer closed
and with some of the icons on the system tray missing.
This is the behavior of a crash from Windows 95 on up.

What's with Windows XP? How do I stop this from
happening?

Have you installed the service packs for XP, having tested
beta versions of XP for Microsoft this bug was logged many
a time in the raid database. Iknow this is very annoying,
try the SP's and see if this fixes it. The only reason I
say install the service packs is we have some machines
here running xp pro sp1 with no explorer crashes.

Yes, all service packs are installed. All "critical
updates" are installed. Is there a point when XP
says "Screw it, you have too many folders, so I'm going
to crash"? I mean, I don't think I really have that
many. It's not like I'm cataloging research data on
pulsars or anything, but I probably have more folders in
some directories than Average Joe User. The thing is, it
would be more annoying to move stuff around rather than
put up with the occasional crash. However, that may not
be the problem after all. What caused the problem in the
beta?
