I had no problems setting up iTunes and my iPhone on my work computer which
runs Vista Ultimate, but on my home system I get the error in the subject
line everytime Vista tries to install the drivers for the iPhone and I can't
find a solution for it anywhere. Here's the steps taken to get the error and
specifically what happens...
1. Latest version of iTunes has been installed (and completely removed and
reinstalled to try to fix)
2. Plug in my iPhone, I receive the "Found New Hardware" screen
3. Click on Locate and install driver software (Recommended)
4. Immediately receive a "Device Installer Error" window that says
"Windows could not load the installer for WPD. Contact your hardware vendor
for assistance".
5. Click OK on that and the window appears asking you to insert the install
disk that came with the device, but that disappears after about 2 seconds.
There is surprisingly little info on this error on the internet and I
haven't come across anything resembling a solution yet.
Other than removing and reinstalling iTunes, the only other suggestion made
to me on Experts Exchange was to right click on the Apple iPhone entry in the
device manager under Portable Devices... problem is though that I don't have
any Apple iPhone entry in my device manager... nor do I have a Portable
Devices entry.
Please help, thanks.
