I recently bought a Plextor EIDE CD-Burner to replace my old SCSI burner
that had given up the ghost. Well i got to installing it last night and
after connecting it to my secondary IDE controler (along with my
DVD-ROM) and powering the system back up, I was presented with the Add
new hardware wizard (as i expected). Within about the time it took me
to roll the mouse down to the next button, i was given the error
"Windows could not load the installer for CDROM. Contact your hardware
vendor" (or something similar to that, I am not presently at that PC, so
its hard for me to give the exact wording). If i hit ok, the wizard
refuses to install the burner from Windows' drivers. I checked
Plextor's site to make sure there aren't any specific (manufacturer
supplied) drivers for this burner, and they say there arent, Windows'
drivers should be sufficient.

Here's the odd (or, odd to me) part. The burner works! For the most
part anyway, I can read cd's from it, and to some extent i can write
with it as well. I wrote three cd's that i've been meaning to write
ever since the old burner died, using CloneCD. However, when i open
NERO (i use it for non cd-copy processes, like writing files directly
from the HDD, or audio from MP3's) it tells me that i have no burner's
installed!

In my searching i've come to the conclusion that this may have something
to do with c:\windows\system32\cdrom.sys, but i'm not sure. I tried
re-expanding that file from my Win2k install CD, but it didnt have any
effect. It also seem's that this file was replaced with one of my
service packs (it seems to be in one of the SPACK backup folders) so
replacing it with the origional may have been a step backward... but i
wasnt aware of that when i replaced that file.

Thanks in advance for any info.
