There only seem to be two choices come with Windows XP, and I find they
are not very helpful. For example, when you have more than one sheet
highlighted in an excel workbook they are not clearly highlighted.

Are there any freeware schemes available or utilities that can change
this sort of thing?

R-click on desktop, choose Properties and then the Appearance tab.
Change to colours, font sizes, icon size ect. to what you want and
apply. Now create a folder called Themes anywhere on your hard disk
where you can find it easily, then go to Start Menu and choose Run.
Type: themes and chose the save button to save the current theme
making sure to save it into your new Themes folder. Should you ever
have to reinstall Windows or you decide to experiment you can always
restore that theme by choosing Other in the Themes drop down menu. You
can even create several to suit your mood. It's a good idea to save
your current theme before messing around with the above so you can
quickly restore things if you create a monstrosity. ;-)
