"Windows cannot open this file"

I recently disabled a number of items on the startup tab in msconfig - and
apparently disabled one too many.

Whenever I try to open virtually any file (most are Word or Excel) I get the
message that "windows cannot open this file" and the option to choose a
program to open it in or to let my computer try to figure it out.

The items I'd disabled are no longer visible in msconfig, so I can't just
check the box next to the right item.

I'd rather avoid doing a system restore as I made many, many changes that I
don't want to undo.

Which utility do I need to add back to startup, and how do I do it??

I cannot think of anything that would be in startup that would cause that
problem
If you deselect an item in Msconfig, that item remains avilable/visible
unless you have uninstalled it/the app
1) Run a Detect/Repair of Office from the cd
2) Check your File Associations

Thanks for responding, DL! I fixed part of the trouble by realizing the
message box offered me the option of "always opening this file type with this
program." That took care of the vast majority of my troubles.

But later I noticed that when attempting to open Office docs from my
website, I'd get a message giving me the option of saving the document or
finding out what created it. I am using your tip to run the detect/repair
utility to see if that helps.

Thanks again!
