It gives me the option to install cleanly but says upgrade is disabled. I
have plenty of RAM and space and the advisor gave me a clean bill of health.
I do have an SATA drive, but that doesn't seem to be the problem. Any
ideas? I did clean the harddrive and try booting from the DVD and that
didn't work either. Says my configuration cannot be upgraded. Thanks.

What version of Windows are you trying to upgrade from?

XP Pro; I assume the logical upgrade is to Vista Business, right?

Lets try again.
To upgrade, XP Pro must be resident, and activated
on your HD. To upgrade your must start Xp Pro,
insert the Vista DVD in drive and then upgrade
from a running Xp installation.

Hi,

That is what I am doing. XP Pro is installed and genuine and is running. It is SP2 by the way. I have tried installing under windows and installing from booting up the Vista DVD; both get the same error; Upgrade Option is disabled.

The same thing is happening to me too. I am running WinXP. Starting IN
WinXP and running the Vista Business Upgrade DVD from Autoplay.
If I select "Clean install" I too get the error message that I cannot do a
clean install even though that is one of the options. I must do an "Upgrade"
install.

While yet another problem, I get a BSOD during an "upgrade" install, but I
think that is another issue.

Suspect that this Dell has some sort of hidden partition, which is reason for the need for a clean install. Dell Support was no help. I probably need to format the harddrive and start over. I get an offer to install on my external E drive. I was tempted to do it; what is the downside to that.

Vista cannot boot from an external USB drive.

Steve, can you confrim exactly which Vista Business DVD you have - 32 bit,
64 bit, upgrade, full or OEM?

Jane, not plain ;) 64 bit enabled :-)
Batteries not included. Braincell on vacation ;-)
