Windows Boot Up Problem

I have a problem with my system.

CPU Info:

Pentium 3. 1006 MHz. 27 GB hard drive. Windows XP Home
operating system. Nortan Anti Virus 2003 Pro installed.
Nvidia GForce 2 64 Mb Graphics card. 256 Mb of RAM.

Problem:

I recently decided to format my computer (Which is
Windows XP Home) I inserted my Start-up disk when one of
my friends told me to insert the 'Windows XP Home' CD-ROM
instead of the floppy. I did so, but nothing happened,
my computer just continued with start up. The computer
never even recognized the CD-ROM inside. I took my CD to
a friends place and i inserted it into his CD-ROM drive,
and his computer found the CD-ROM, though my computer
didn't. Could you please give me an in-depth explanation
of how to enable my drive to read the CD-ROM at start up.
I have to CD Drives.

1. Liteon DVD-ROM LTD-1 (LTD-1 is what it said in DOS
when i was in my computer configuration) but in windows
it says 'LTD-165H'

2.SONY CD-RW CRX160S SCSI CdRom Device. Though for an
unknown reason my computer classifies the type of my CD-
RW to be a 'DVD/CD-ROM drives' though it also classifies
my DVD to be a 'DVD/CD-ROM drives'

hank you very much for your help.

Hi,

You need to configure the system BIOS to read the CD drive as a bootable
device before the hard drive.

To enter the system BIOS, click start/shutdown/restart windows if you are
currently running, or simply start the system.

After windows shuts down, the machine begins to reload. At this point you
should either have a manufacturer logo screen or a POST screen that shows
the hard drives and other devices being detected. You need to enter BIOS at
this point before windows begins to load.

If it is the latter, there should be a line that says "Press <some key> to
enter setup", you will need to depress the indicated key.

If you get a manufacturer logo, you can try referring to the manual you
recieved with the pc to discover which key you need to depress while the
logo is being displayed or you can try hitting the escape key. Generally,
the keys used to enter the BIOS are F1, F2, F10, <delete>, <escape>, and the
space bar, though there are some others.

In the BIOS, you use the arrow, enter, and plus/minus keys to navigate and
make changes. Check the bottom of the screen for the F key functions. The
entry you are looking for should be on the boot tab.

Once you have made your changes, you want to "exit saving changes", usually
F10, to restart the system.

Thank you very much. I was well-aware of how to enter the
BIOS :). But in the bios start up menu my system has one
of my cd rom drives, only the DVD drive. And the part
where it says: 'Other boot devices' it has 'INT18 Devive
(Network)' I don't have a net-work. When i press it to
see my other option, there is 'SCSI Boot Device' Do i
enable the 'SCSI Boot Device' ?

Hi,

That depends - is the DVD/CD drive on a SCSI card?

Hi:
I had similar problem just a couple of weeks ago.
Like you, CD drive/reading is sometime tricky.

In my case, I needed to consult to the maker of my
machine that eventually solved the problem.

Hi,

Let me rephrase that: How is the drive physically connected to the
motherboard? Through an IDE cable tied directly to the motherboard or to a
card that is attached to the motherboard?

You need to tell the machine's BIOS to boot from the CD in preference to
hard drive. Hit the appropriate Hot key as the initial power on memory
check is going on; usually DEL or F1 or F2 or maybe F 10

There look for a Boot page (in which highlight the CD and use the
numeric pad + to put it up top; or in BIOS settings for a'Boot Order'
in which use PageDn to cycle round to CDRom-C:, , ,
Hit ESC, have the CD ready in the drive, then take Exit and save
settings and it will reboot to the CD
