I would like to start using Windows backup in XP Pro. Can someone tell me
if I can backup my system and restore it after a catastrophic failure using
a drive connected by USB or Firewire?

Thanks,

IF you are referencing fully restoring a system with an image [ghost],
Acronis True Image [the program I use] recommends that images be created
within a dedicated partition on an INTERNAL hard drive. The only way to know
for sure if you can restore from a USB connected external device is to
create an image to such a device and attempt to restore the image
immediately.

Yes, but the restore procedure is complicated. Practice backing up some data
and then restoring it to a different location so you don't overwrite
existing data. You don't want to figure out how the restore process works
while under pressure. Personally with an external drive I'd recommend a
drive imaging program. I use Acronis True Image. There are many other good
imaging programs.

Yes, you can. You would want to start by installing XP from the
CD first, because that's what installs the backup program. Then
install your USB or Firewire device, and go ahead and Restore the
rest of everything.

If you read the Help and play around a bit with it, you'll find
backup pretty easy to use. You can backup or restore a range of
files from one to all of the ones you have backed up. You just
put clicks in an Explorer like window.
Read up on it, and try a few test runs; that way if you do
have a catastropic crash, you'll know ahead of time what to do.
Check around the MVP site; lots of good articles on the subjet
there. http://www.mvps.org/

I also recommend spending 39.95 for acronis disk imaging,
http://www.acronis.com, and select true image. It will save you hours of
frustration when didaster strikes.

Yes and no, if using win default backup, its kinda complicated
As others say an imaging app is better
