I have installed Windows backup from the Win XP CD. The only options where
to back up to that I can select appear to be a Floppy or ZIP drive but not
to the attached USB Hard drive. That seems silly or am I doing something
silly?

Windows Backup does not backup to USB (or Firewire) hard drives.

And that was back in 2003. Was this ability removed? Or is the article
just wrong?

You could use some third party freeware...

That is what I was wondering myself. I have just upgraded from Win98SE,
took my Win XP CD (incl. SP2), found Windows backup there and downloaded
it. However the dropdown window does not give me any other options except
those mentioned -:(
On the subject of third party freeware I am struggling. . Ideally I would
like synch software that would be able to synch between three folders, one
of
them being central one on this external drive and the two others on two PCs.
in other words the central one would be able to synch in both directions
with
each PC when connected to it.

Right you are, and my apologies to the OP.

From the Help and Support Center: "The backup storage medium can be a
logical drive such as your hard drive, or a separate storage device such as
a removable disk..."

Albeit not automatic - you could schedule it with scheduled tasks or run it
manually easily enough.

If it should detect any external drive including USB hard drive then there
must be something wrong with my software because it does not. It does not
even recognise my logical D: drive but it does list Floppy and ZIP drive.

I looked at that just today but it can synchronise only between two folders,
not three. I could keep my ext. hard drive data in synch with, say desktop
and vice versa but I could not also keep Laptop in sync with ext. hard drive
data of the same kind, e.g. OE store folder or Favorites
