I have auto update set to download and install new windows updates to my pc
automatically. However I do NOT want to upgrade to IE7 at this time as some
websites I work from advise against it until all their testing has been
completed.

Do i need to turn off auto updates to avoid downloading the new version of IE?

From the MS IE7 Blog:

"Of course we want to make sure you are ready to upgrade, so AU will notify
you when IE7 is ready to install by presenting a welcome screen. You can
choose whether or not to install it; IE7 will not install without your
consent"

I turned off auto *installation* of updates years ago. One of
several reasons is that Microsoft, despite being told many
times, does not understand USB external discs. I think the best
thing is to allow auto download but not auto install so that you
can take necessary precautions like demounting USB discs.

Either get this tool from Microsoft:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=4516A6F7-5D44-482B-9DBD-
869B4A90159C&displaylang=en

Or manually edit the registry as described on the above page under 'blocker scipt'.
