Windows Audio Service

Running Win XP Pro v5.1 with all updates installed on an Asus A8V laptop. A
couple of weeks ago all of a sudden both my iTunes and Windows Media Player
stopped working. The fault was tracked down to Windows Audio Service having
stopped. If I started the service then my media players were fine but when
the laptop was restarted, despite the Audio Service being set to automatic,
the same problem arose.

Then I applied a recovery process that after 1 minute restarted the service.

Noticed that when the laptop was restarted at first the Audio Service was
not running but if left for a minute then it did restart and media players
worked.

The strange thing was that as the Audio Service started, the Windows task
bar changed from the usual blue colour to white and the font style appeared
to change.

Can anyone throw any light on this?

Gratefully,

Try a system restore, you can go back up to 90 days or at least to
before the problem started.
Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore

Byte, what an obvious answer but it took you to think of it. Thank you.

As it happens, the fault seems to have disappeared so perhaps the Windows
Audio Service is self-recovering. Anyway, if it happens again, I know what
to do.
