Windows application error popup box - debug button

I had an error on my XP Pro system a couple months ago and the application
error dialog box popped up as usual. When I went to hit the close button I
accidentally pressed the debug button. Now my PC is running VERY slowly. All
programs, even simple applications such as the windows calculator, take over
a minute (I actually timed it) to start up. Once running though, the
applications seem fine. There's no lag or delay within the program after they
finally startup. Is there any way I can fix this without reformatting my
computer? I don't want to go that route if possible because other than this,
there's nothing wrong with the PC. This may be relevant also, I've noticed
that my PC's hard drive access light is going crazy too, even when there's
nothing running. I checked in task manager and there's no applications
running and the System Idle Proccess is the only thing showing any real usage
of the CPU.

You might want to check hd manu site for a disk checking utility.
I assume your sys is virus and scumware free?

Yeah, I've run anti-virus and spyware checks a good 7 or 8 times since this
started happening. The hard drive looks good too. I have run disk check on it
and no error were reported. It seems to me (and I'm in no way an expert on
windows) that windows is churning over every digit of code in an application
before actually starting it. I remember reading where someone had the same
sort of situation after clicking debug (which is why I tried to avoid ever
hitting the button myself). But this was a few years ago and I have no idea
where I came across the info.
