Windows doesn't include ANY antivirus software unless you install
something.

I appreciate your response. I disabled the firewall but it says that the
Windows antivirus is 'ON'. Is there a way to turn it off? I don't know how
that got there because I don't have the updates automatically downloaded and
installed and, as far as I know, I didn't download or install this. No one
esle uses this computer. If you don't know how to turn this off do you know
how I can find out how?
Thanks.

Repeat - there is *no* antivirus included with any Windows operating
system. You need a third-party antivirus installed (version not earlier
than 2005), with an active subscription.

You have OTHER antivirus software installed, there is NO antivirus
software included as part of Windows XP from Microsoft.

Antivirus software is GOOD for you.

I do have an antivirus program running. I run AVG, so I guess what I should
have asked is why does the Windows Security center show that there is an
antivirus 'ON' even when I have the AVG antivirus turn off? I seem to be
having a problem with the program I use for work. For some reason I can
access it from any other computer except this system I have at home. I have
been using it on this home system until yesterday and now for some reason I
can't get it to open and was told that it could be because of the antivirus
running. I'm just trying to figure out why the Windows Security center is
showing that there is an antivirus 'ON' after I disconnect AVG, my antivirus
program.

I understand that. What I don't understand is why the Windows Security Center
shows that the antivirus is 'ON' when I've turned it off. I understand that
the antivirus program is 'GOOD'. I just don't understand why the Windows
Security center continues to show that it is 'ON' when it's 'OFF'.

Because you've probably only disabled part of AVG. There is no reason in
the world why any program would require you to disable your antivirus.
I believe you are confusing your antivirus with your firewall.

Have a professional computer repair person come on-site to help you.
This is not going to be something you'll be able to solve in a
newsgroup. I'm not saying this to hurt your feelings; just being
practical.

That was not how you stated it earlier.

Windows is showing that you have AV software on your machine and that
some parts of it are enabled and have current definitions. It's up to
AVG to tell "Windows" that it's enabled or not - Windows does not
interface with AVG, AVG interfaces with Windows security center.

I would also suggest that AVG is not the problem with you connecting to
work.

You're not hurting my feelings. I drive a car but don't know how to fix it. I
don't know a lot about computers but I try to get whatever help I can when I
don't know what the problem is. I'm a realotr and I can't get the MLS system
to work. It was working fine on this computer yesterday and I've done nothing
to my computer but for some reason I can't get it to work today. The
technical support department of our real estate board had been trying to help
me but we never were able to get it to work. I'm getting ready to call them
back even though it's almost my bedtime. If I can't get it working tonight I
guess I'll have to try again tomorrow. Thanks for your reply.

I support many local agenets, just add the entire MSL site to your
trusted zone.

Thanks, but the tech support walked me through that yesterday and that didn't
work either. I'm getting ready to call them back in just a few minutes to see
if we can't get it resolved today. I have to be able to work from home to
look up property or spend all of my time at my broker's office, which is not
going to happen. Thanks for the suggestions.

In Internet explorer, and you have to use IE, not FireFox, make sure
that you've set the Trusted zone to "Default" level of security.

You might also need to ADD the MLS to the pop-ups approved list as it
does have pop-ups.

Just wanted to let you know that it's now fixed. I spent several hours on the
phone yesterday with the real estate MLS tech support and then this morning
again. It seems that the BellSouth dial up excelerator was causing the
problem, as far as we can tell. I have the wireless cable but keep the dial
up as a back up just in case the cable is out. I don't know why that would
suddenly cause problems when it hasn't changed over the past few years but
the problem is solved whatever it was. The young man who helped me today was
able to dig a little deeper into my system and had me go into some files that
had checks next to them. After he had me uncheck some of them and restart my
system the MLS was working again. I do appreciate all of the help from this
newsgroup.

Thanks for posting back and letting us know. As I support some real
estate people it's good to know that BS has a screwy dial-up acc
program.

On a different note, how the heck were you able to use the MLS on dial-
up? It had to be unbearably slow, taking MINUTES to upload pictures of
properties.

Slow is an understatement but when your cable is out and your clients want
info on property you have to just sit and tap you fingers until it loads. I
have a TV in my home office so I would watch TV while I waited for the info
to load. I have to be doing more then one thing at a time. LOL
Thanks again.
