Hello,

I have a Windows 98SE machine that I cannot get to properly
join my Active Directory domain. When I log in I get an
error message that says "No Domain Server available to
validate password.......". If I click OK on this box, i
still log in and I can see machines on the domain from
Network Neighborhood but I cannot access them or any
domain resource. It seems as if I am on the domain, but I
cannot get logged in as a validated user. Any ideas?

Thanks for your time.

Have you tried creating an LMHOSTS file on the 98 machine
and use the 0x1b to simulate a WINS PDC record?

Search for the LMHOSTS file and edit it with NotePad.

At the bottem of the REMs add

IPaddress <TAB> "DOMAINNAME \0x1b" <TAB> #PRE
IPaddress <TAB> PDCEmulator<TAB>#PRE #DOM:domainname

The IPAddress is the PDC Emulator (This will be the first
DC created in the Domain if you have not moved th FSMO
roles.)
Ensure there are 20 spaces between the "" or it won't work.
Save the LMHOSTS file.
View the LMHOSTS file and view file extenstions to ensure
that there is not a .sam or .txt appended to LMHOSTS. If
there is then rename it. There can be no . extensions.

Reboot the workstation

To test this open a command prompt and type:

NBTSTAT -c

If you don't see

Domainname (0x1b) in the table then there is a mistake in
the LMHOSTS file, probably in the number of spaces between
the "". Correct it and reboot and run NBTSTAT -c again.
Once you see the

Domainname (01xb)

You should be able to join the domain.

The other thing that could be preventing you from joining
the 2000 domain with a Windows 98 is the NTLM version.

If the above doesn't work email me and I can give you the
instructions for checking the NTLM versions.

Mack.
