short story version,

cant get windows 98 machines to authinticate themselves through active
directory, dns, dhcp. what is the proper way to set up the client
machines running windows 98 and what about setting things up right on
the server.

long story version,

im new to networking. i jumped into the midle of this at my work 3
months ago when our system admninistrator left. i have been having a
problem with all of our windows 98 machines not authinticating
themselves through avtive directory dns or dhcp (this has always been
a problem, it has never been solved and im trying to understand what
is going on). all 3 of these services (dns, dhcp active directory)
reside on the same server. if i look into dns i find that its not
assigning the windows 98 machines a ip address. googleing around i
found that windows 98 machines dont do this through dns but through

on the windows 2000 server cd there is a active directory client that
can be installed on a windows 98 machine. that solved my problem of
not being able to get the server to valadate the user password on the
98 machines.

this just seems to be a big hole in our network. anyone can walk into
our building with a laptop using windows 98 and get onto our network.
some of the windows 98 systems here arnt even setup in active
directory for a user name or computer name.

i just want to know what is the right way to do things? does anyone
have a good link or some suggestions for me.

thanks,
AD
