Windows 98 Logon problem

Hi all,

Recently a few of my Win98 clients cannot log on to the Active Directory
domain. When trying to logon, it says that no doamin controller is available
to validate the login request. Even while logged on, the user cannot access
the
shares on this DC, the error is "Access is denied". But I have checked their
setup and confirmed that they are correct and the shares on the DC is
configured with the correct permissions RWXD.

Does anyone has this problem?

Thanks.

There can be a number of causes for this, and would like to get some
additional info if possible, however look at the following things;
Be sure that your win2k dc's are at sp3 or higher
verify if this is a machine problem or user problem, ie can this same user
denied logging on from a win98 box successfully logon from a 2k, xp, nt4,
etc machine and connect to that dc (or even another win98 box).
Is it only to that "One" dc, or if logged on, are they able to connect to
shares on other servers while being denied on the dc (or is this the only
dc/server in the domain)
Did this just suddenly start happening, and if so, what may have changed
just prior to seeing this start.
Please include the exact error msg they get when this fails, as there are
several that are similar but mean different things.
Does this happen randomly to these users where somtimes they logon fine but
other times not, and is the same user/s always affected, all users, only
some, etc.
Verify that name resolution is also working properly for those affected
clients (wins, lmhosts, or whatever your using for them) so that they can
ping by name the dc etc. Also that the dc is correctly registering the 1B
record in wins for the domain, and/or consider adding an lmhosts file on the
client just to test with.
Use the following to do that and be sure that you see all the registrations
indicated in the article when you run the nbtstat commands;

Oh Thanks for your kindness David. I got this error on the DC(2nd DC)
which is hosting the application through netbios share.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: BROWSER
Event Category: None
Event ID: 8032
Date: 1/13/2004
Time: 11:20:44 AM
User: N/A
Computer: ITDEMON
Description:
The browser service has failed to retrieve the backup list too many

I did some research on this error and found out that the causes might be
multiple network interfaces causing the problem or File and Print
Sharing not enabled on the server itself or on the master browser.
However, my server is not a multihomed host and File and Print Sharing
is enabled. I suspect that the Win98 problem may be due to this issue.

The strange thing is that the Win 98 logon problem only happens
occasionally. Mostly in the morning. After the user logs off she logs
on again and the error appears. Yet sometimes while working on her PC,
the "Access is denied" error to the share appears. I had to logoff a
few times or reboot her PC to resolve the issue. Her configuration is
ok and I can ping the two DC' s by hostname. The nslookup on the DCs
also looks ok.
