The last fails tells me it's video drivers. I go in to safe mode and
delete the card. That lets you reboot into Windows to get on the web
and get different video drivers.

addendum
i changed to a pci video card with no change
disabled process win.ini and system.ini in msconfig
now it boots through the
"now windows is setting up the following items"
Time zone/control panel etc
restarts runs scandisk and goes into
"now windows is setting up the following items"
Time zone/control panel etc
again
and now the mouse is not working plus an illegal operation is
appearing [rundll] near the finish
its in a endless loop
any advice is gratefully accepted i am going mad with this

If it were me, I'd start over, but this time use the PCI card. After you get
Win98 up & running, then try the Geforce again, but with different drivers.

I had a similar thing hapen to me twice. One time was a bad hard drive.
Try running a dos type program from the maker of the drive if they have one.

The second time the processor was overheating.

looking at bootlog i can see all windows standard fonts failed to load
loadfail error 0016
a clue??
i am testing the hard drive / memory / cpu function now
and will post back...this is really unusual...never seen it b4...i
will reformat and load win off a different cd if nothing comes out of
the diagnostics.....have no way of seeing what the cpu temp is on this
ancient board but the fan is spinning and heat fins look clean
enough...
thanks for your intererest

Have you set the BIOS to failsafe defaults and disabled any virus
protection? That may help.
Does the MoBo have a VIA chipset?
If so, you'll need a patch from the manufacture to make sure the video
(maybe even the processor) plays nice with Win98.
If all else fails, try a reformat and reinstall with the PCI card.

setup defaults loaded other option is turbo defaults
virus protection is off
i will reformat and load off another 98se cd
all devices check out ok using low level diags ....
memory, ext memory hard disk, cpu and co pro
intel 440LX chipset
its a real head scratcher
all that is left is a stuffed 98 cd.....
i havent checked video as initial load was with the agp card..
all subsequent tests reboots etc have been with a 4meg pci which makes
no difference...the only clue is the font load failure 0016
any one suggest another group to post this to?
any other ideas or anything i have missed
