windows 98 High speed parallel port

I need a laptop that can run a high speed parallel port for
the purpose of uploading data to multi function
printer/copier/fax/email machines . Is running windows 98
the only solution?? What is the actual speed limiting
factor, hardware or operating system?? My dillema is that
my new XP laptop will not run high speed parallel port and
my old windows 98 laptop hardware will not support new
application downloading/uploading tools with newer
equipment. Any suggestions??

Your speed is limited by hardware..the speed of the parallel port itself...
You would be best off to use a USB2 device is possible if you really want
good speed.

No, why would you think that it is?

Most often, the one and only necessary step is to go into
the bios setup menu and set the parallel port from the
default ("standard" or similarly worded, to enhanced "EPP"
or DMA).

Depends on exactly what you're trying to do. Are you trying
to send more than (roughly) 800K to 1MB per second? If so,
parallel is just too slow for your needs, but most printer
copier fax email etc, machines do not need over 800K per
second. What is it that happens when you try to use it,
does it just take forever?

Is it possible the software itself is buggy and the job just
isn't spooling to be sent across the port fast enough, that
the slow performance has mulitiple causes? Maybe not, but
we can't see the system as well as you can so I
ask/wonder/etc.

Xp should support an Enhanced Parallel Port. Look at the
bios and tell us what it's set to there.
 
What I'm doing exactly is uploading firmware/software to
copier systems. Even if I set parallel port to ECP or EPP
it is very slow on XP. With recent copier equipment I can
use a ethernet crossover for real fast uploads but I service
many older models that only use parallel port(centronics).
I also use a USB to Parallel conversion but it only works
with a few uploading applications. The APP I use the most
can only go throug network or parallel ports. Which one I
use depends on the copiers interface. If the copier only
has a parallel port I have to dig up my old win98 laptop
which is becoming more problematic.
