Hello,

I've got Windows 98 running file and print sharing on my lan. The other
computer I use are all XP Pro, but this computer, for reasons that are
beyond my control, must remain 98 (The software I use on it does not
work on higher versions of windows.)

Recently, this computer has decided that it does not want to share it's
files any more. When I attempt to login to the computer \\123.45.678.9
it pops up the explorer box with the shared folder like always, but
when I double click on the shared folder to put in my password, it
behaves as though the password is incorrect.

It doesn't matter how many times I try to put in the password, or if I
reboot the computer (or the XP machines), it continues to behave the
same way.

However! If I disable the password, and just make it so anyone could
access the machine, everything works fine. But the second I turn the
password back on (or set a password to a different folder) whichever
folder has a password set on it I can't access.

I can have one folder with a password and a folder w/o running
simultaneously, and only the folder w/o the password is accessiable.

Any thoughts?

with windows xp does it also ask for a username when trying to access
the windows 98 share? because the username could be what is making the
password appear incorrect. Just a thought.

In XP, the username box is grayed out, with the IP address of the 98
machine, followed by a slash and then 'Guest' in the box. While this
has never been a problem before, I can see where it might create
issues.
