I am using the windows 7 rc right now and planning on upgrading should I get
ultimate? or just home premium. What's the advantage?

No one can tell you which one to get. Look at what each one has. Decide your
main uses of the operating system. Then see which O/S best matches what you
want to use the computer for.

Your question is similar to your asking; should I buy a Ford or a Toyota. No
one can tell you.

No need to get Ultimate if you want want to go higher than
Home Premium. Get Professional. Professional is Ultimate
without BitLocker and 35 built-in languages. That's why
Ultimate is only $20 US more than Professional. However,
until July 11 in Canada and USA, you can pre-order Home
Premium and Professional upgrade versions for half price.
Win 7 includes both 32 and 64 bit versions in all retail
packages.

Off the top of my head: get Professional, but only because it sounds better
than 'Home Premium' and you will be taken more seriously. Windows 7 Ultimate
will be almost identical to Windows 7 Enterprise. Those two will have only a
few extra features over Professional, constellating around security and
features of worth only in corporate environments. Ultimate will probably
*not* be offering future downloads of extra goodies and games this time
'round, so in all likelihood you will want Professional and it will be the
cherry.

Each version 'up' is a superset of the one below i.e. it Professional
includes everything in Home Premium PLUS extra Professional features.

Here's a good comparison chart:

Afaik, Windows 7 RC is Ultimate only. You won't be able to upgrade to Home
Premium unless you do a fresh install.

For my desktop I plan on Professional. Windows Ultimate and Enterprise -
which are almost identical this time - have some corporate features over
Professional such as bitlocker, but that's about it. This time 'round it is
unlikely there will be any Ultimate extras - no games to download, nor any
dream scenes etc. etc. So I'm going to run Professional not Ultimate this
time. I've already pre-ordered a copy at about 50% off from Amazon.

OH? Why? The ONLY difference between Pro and Ultimate is Bit locker and
more languages other than the one you used to install your OS. BFD,
unless he absolutely HAS to have bitlocker and/or extra languages,
Ultimate would be a total waste of money! Furthermore, go for Pro and
use a third party encryption software and still save. You people with
your uninformed advice crack me up, but worse, it's BAD advice to boot!

Um... Dude, yes Win7RC is Ultimate, however, the finals will be Home,
Pro, and Ultimate. WOW, get educated about the subject BEFORE replying.
Not to be an A-hole, its just why would you WANT to mislead someone
because you know nothing of what you are posting about?

Of course you will want to do a fresh install! Why on earth would you
want to upgrade an RC even if it were possible?? In the first place,
your RC should by all means be a separate install. You will be able to
upgrade your Vista or XP install that you didn't, (Shouldn't have),
disturbed. ..Or buy the FULL version and do a clean install that way.
(Although MS states that Only a Clean install can be done with XP, and
can be done with the Upgrade) MOF you HAVE to have a valid XP or VISTA
install to upgrade as stated by MS anyway. Friggen A!

You really should stop being an a--hole. Even thought the OP is "out
there," he's trying to give valid advice. <EG>

There is no need for polemics or mindless rantings here. I am just saying
that if you want to upgrade the RC, then you will have to purchase Ultimate.
Not everyone sits in their parents' basement tweaking computer systems all
day long, never seeing the light of day. If you have a stable installation
of the RC, then there is no reason not to want to upgrade it.

Well...., until it expires in July of next year, that is. Remember,
the RC is time-bombed.

I fully realize that, but the computer I have RC on is, for one reason or
another, particularly stable at the moment. I anticipate wanting to upgrade
it to RTM when the time comes, and I have almost a year. I assume that MS
will allow upgrade from Vista or from the RC, hope so anyway. I imagine
that many others wil be in the same situation. I don't mind having to buy
Ultimate, because I use at least one of its features.

Yes.

or from the RC,

No, although there is reputed to be a workaround that makes it
possible.
