Windows 7 Windows 7 RC public release

I'm looking forward to this :) It's much faster than Vista on my PC, and it even runs well on my old laptop - I think people will be pleasantly surprised by this OS :) I'm not keep on the new taskbar, but it's easy to set back to the old Vista style one.

Good old Microsoft. Only a nine month delay from their original promise.

I think I should have stayed in bed today :o

I could have deleted that post I suppose but that would be sly.

So I hold my hands up and admit to thinking '2010' when I saw '2009'.

What a pillock I am.

Does this mean that W7 will be commercially available in less than a week then?

Will all Beta users now have to shell out to activate permanently?

Hmm.

The release date is still forecast for Jan 2010 ... I suspect MS are actually aiming for 2009 ... Oct? Nov? Dec makes more sense. ;)

We'll get Viv to run the book. :D

Nope, it's the RC (Release Candidate) version that comes out on the 5th - so that's the version that MS would like to release but are allowing people to test in case there are any last minute bugs :)

If I remember correctly, the beta last until Aug 1st and the RC to some time in 2010. If you just want to play with W7 to see how it works, try using VirtualBox to install it within Vista :thumb:

I've already tried W7 64 Bit on a seperate HDD (caddies) which was something of a disaster to be quite honest.

I have now wiped that disk and have been meaning to try Win7 32 Bit for some time now, just haven't got round to it yet.

I will say that the parts of W7 64 Bit that worked, worked well, and I did rather like the look of it. My problems were with drivers and software.

I still don't fully understand what's going on though

I have a Beta that lasts til August 1st, there's a Release Candidate released next week and the final version is set for January 2010 it seems.

So how long does the Release Candidate last?

Is it worth installing the beta rather than the release candidate?

If I want to keep Win7 Beta come August 1st will I have to pay for it?

Will the eventual OEM versions of W7 cots a lot less than online activation of the Beta with Microsoft, cos they usually charge a lot more?

Maybe I'm daft but I do find it all rather confusing.

Is there a linky to this assumption...?

The RC works until 1st June 2010, and after that it will stop working - so you'd need to buy W7 to keep using it.

I'm pretty sure buying OEM is the cheapest way, it has been in the last :)

Thanks for the info Ian :thumb:

Ok, I've decided. I will d/l the release candidate and give it a dry run.

If I like it I will probably install it on my main machine, the one in my sig, and then install Vista to my media machine.

Then come June 1st next year mI will secure an OEM copy, hopefully.

Sounds like a plan :)

But - 64 bit or 32 bit - that is the question...

If you've got 4GB memory in that machine, I'd go for 64 bit :thumb: That's what I'm going to do anyway, as most hardware drivers seem to work ok with it :)

No, just my clever brain. :p

I really wish MS would stop pussyfooting around and drop 32bit OS nevermind 16bit ... all this backward compatability is just bloat. ;)

my 2bit DOS does all I need

Thing is, if Vista had only been released as a 64 Bit OS it wouldn't have worked for me.

I know this as I've tried a 'trial' version of Vista 64 Bit and I was beset with problems from all sides.

This was, however, some six months or so ago, perhaps things have been improved.
