Microsoft have revealed that the name for it's new operating system is going to be "Windows 7", the successor to Windows Vista. This name was previously a code name, with many people suspecting that this would change to something else nearer release.

"The decision to use the name Windows 7 is about simplicity. Over the years, we have taken different approaches to naming Windows. We've used version numbers like Windows 3.11, or dates like Windows 98, or "aspirational" monikers like Windows XP or Windows Vista. And since we do not ship new versions of Windows every year, using a date did not make sense. Likewise, coming up with an all-new "aspirational" name does not do justice to what we are trying to achieve, which is to stay firmly rooted in our aspirations for Windows Vista, while evolving and refining the substantial investments in platform technology in Windows Vista into the next generation of Windows."

You mean an update to Windows Vista that they still haven't finished yet:lol:

Who is this tinpot company they call Microsoft..:D

Aye, it came across to me like that.

The kernel is still going to be based on Vista so it seems to me MS are asking the public to pay for a patch.

Hmm.

Hmm.

Even Long John Silver bought his own patch, and he were a pirate:D

Whilst Windows 7 will be BASED on the Vista kernal there are some major differences......
the main one being the Windows 7 is taking alot from server 2008, being that its kernal will be modular/component based.
Don't expect Windows 7 to be as performance degrading as Vista :D

Obviously I hope Windows 7 is an improvement but just how will people feel who bought Vista on a wave of promises of how great it is?

Seems to me MS have admitted Vista was a bit of a turkey.

And this POV from somebody who quite likes Vista.

Don't get me wrong.... I like Vista... in fact it's my main O/S and then for S/W that isn't compatible I use a virtual PC with 98 or XP. Just a shame it's so resource heavy.

Exactly !!!! Still we're stuck with it now.

Having said that I, too, quite like it.

Vista, is Windows 6 ... Windows 7, is actually gonna be Windows 6.1

Just fire it up and see ... ;)
