Get XP virtual software from Microsoft. It will let you run XP on you
Win 7 machine. Its free if you have Win 7 Pro or higher.

Change the BIOS setting of the boot order to put the CD drive first.
Then put the Windows XP CD in the drive, boot the machine, and follow
the prompts.

*However* note that you can succeed in doing this only if XP drivers
exist for all your laptop's hardware. With newer machines, they may
not exist. Check on HP's web site to find out.

"Windows 7" says nothing about WHICH edition of it that you have. Some
editions of Windows 7 include a license for Windows XP. If you have the
Pro or Ultimate versions, you can use XP Mode (you have to install it)
along with VirtualPC (you have to install it) to run a virtualized copy
of Windows XP. However, it is likely that games won't play well when
virtualized.

If you have a legitimate license for Windows XP (that was NOT used in an
upgrade path that ended up at your Windows 7 installation since each
upgrade usurps the license for the prior version), you could repartition
your hard disk, install Windows XP in the other partition, and use a
multi-boot manager (in the bootstrap area of the MBR) to select which
partition to load its OS. You would reboot and select which OS to load.
GAG (at sourceforge.net) is a free multi-boot manager. However, don't
go to multi-booting unless you know what you are doing when
repartitioning your hard disks and how to prepare existing OS'es for the
partition changes.
