I was wondering if it was possible to get the Windows 3.x
GUI/shell in Windows XP? Maybe if anybody knows any 3rd
party software out there that was specially designed to
perform this task? Thanks :-)

Hi

You can run Win 3.x via Virtual PC:

That seems pretty handy, But I was wondering if you can
just have xp look like Windows 3.x and have the program
manager available in 3.x. Thanks you.

if you use style xp http://www.tgtsoft.com/ and install the free visual
style for windows 3.x from www.themexp.org you can
the location of the 3x skin is here:

http://www.themexp.org/preview.php?mid=51567&type=vs&view=date&page=3&cat=&name=Windows+3x.zip

if you want a free solution instead of style xp you can try the theme
patcher
http://www.windowsx.org/enhance/myvs/uxtheme.html
(have not tested this one though)

Hi

You can't have XP looking like Win 3.1 - who would want to :-)) As for
Program Manager that is a Q David Candy could better answer than I can. He
would know if it is possible.

Type Progman in Start - Run

if you like it

Shell
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

Data type Range Default value
REG_SZ Path and file name There is no default value for this entry.

Description
Specifies an alternate user interface for Windows 2000.

This entry stores the setting of the Custom user interface Group Policy. Group Policy adds this entry to the registry when you enable the Custom user interface policy. If you disable the policy or set it to Not configured, Group Policy deletes the entry from the registry.

The Explorer program (Explorer.exe) creates the familiar Windows interface, but you can use this entry to specify an alternate interface. When this entry appears in the registry, the system starts the interface you specify instead of Explorer.exe.

Value Meaning
(Entry does not appear.) Explorer.exe is used as the interface.
executable name The specified program is used as the interface.

The value of this entry must include the file name of the interface program, including the .exe file name extension. If the interface program file is not located in a folder specified in the Path environment variable for your system, the entry must include the fully qualified path to the file.

Sabrina--

There are a number of sites you can google or search engine for, but here's
one for getting a little ancillary info on Windows 3.1 and previous Windows
OS's including Wintendo and Pre-Wintendo.

Incidentally, if you like oldies but goodies in XP, typing "mplayer2" in the
run box will bring up Win Media Player 6.4. Why Version 6.4 maybe someone
else can answer. Typing "wmplayer" in the run box will bring up your
current WMP version.
