hi...
I wanted to know if I don't switch off my machine (2k professional) then
does it consume power? I mean if I make its power setting such that I
turnoff the hard disk after a little time of system being unused ....

what is the logic behind standby???
thanks

Of course it consumes power, any electrical item thats
switched on will consume power.

The idea of standby is to save power. By powering down the
monitor and hard drive, less power is consumed.

Yes it consumes power, standby will save some power but on
a desktop unit it won't amount to too much, it also saves
the contents of your memory to hard disk and restores it.
This does take a while to do if you have a large amount of
RAM, you also need as much hard disk space as you have
RAM. If you do want to leave the system on, my advice is
to set the power options in the the control panel to
switch of hard drives, etc. after a long period of
inacitivity and switch to a completely black screen saver.
One big draw is the monitor so switch it off when you
leave the system
