Windows 2003 Upgrade

Have 2000 AD with 2 DC's. Getting a new 2003 server. Can I just run
forestprep/adprep, then dc promo directly on the new server and take
all DC roles or should I upgrade the 2000 operations master to 2003
first? Not sure if schema updates will succeed unless done on the 2000
dc. I don't want to buy an extra 2003 license for the current 2000
operations master unless I have to. If possible can I just leave one
of the 2000 boxes as a backup DC without upgrading it to 2003. Thank
you very much ahead of time.

no need to upgrade the current DCs....

only need to prepare schema, domain and sysvol
