Good Day,

I was looking for a Windows 2003 newsgroup but cannot find any.

My problem is that after adding some components to my installation and
restarting the system. When I reach the login screen and then login, the
login dialog box disappears, then the screen stays BLUE and nothing else
happens after that.

If I press CTRL+ALT+DEL then I get the Security Window, but the only
thing I can do from there is Shutdown the computer. If I select the Task
Manager option, the Security dialog disappears and nothing happens.

I have gone as far as running Windows 2003 server setup and did a repair
where it removed all the files and then reinstalled from the CD, but
still no go.

This is a very critical server. To make matters even WORST, this is the
server that hosts and manages the BACKUP so I can't even restore the
server from a backup.

Can some Windows expert tell me what is the process after the login
script and if there is a way for me to solve what is happening without
reformatting the drive.

PLEASE help! EXTREMELY URGENT!!!!

Thanks.

Windows 2k3 doesn't exist! Only WinPro2k.

Next time improve your subject line!

Adding some components? What components? Have you already tried last known
good?

Can you access the machine via remote desktop (start/run/mstsc)? If so,
perhaps you could uninstall the components.

Ed

installed the FTP, WebDAV, .Net.

I then restarted the computer. Then reapplied the SP1.

Ed, not sure if that will work, but I will give it a shot. I will surely
have to come here tomorrow and work on it again.

Have you tried logging in with a different user account, or try logging
in with the local or domain admin. did you get an error code when the
blue screened, another solution is to go to another system and remotely
manage it and look at the system event log to see if you can determine
the error.

HTH,
Bob Smith

Thanks Bob,

No I have not tried a different account, planning to try that today. I
have tried logging in the the local machine, as well as tried safe mode,
no go.

Just started trying to manage it remotely, looking at the Event Logs as
I type here. I notice that when I look in the Registry in the Run
branch, I see where it has a key of UserFaultCheck with a value of
%systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u command waiting to be executed.

Will give more info as it comes.

Thanks all for your help.

This is really critical as this is my backup, antivirus and WSUS server.

Good news, I believe that we maybe closer to solving the issue. I booted
up the server and then accessed it from another machine (as suggested),
when I looked at the services applet, I noticed that the DCOM Server
Process Launcher status is STARTING. Now, when I select this service, I
am unable to stop it or restart it.

Is there anyway to sort this, maybe this is where the problem is, also
are there any dependencies that may also be causing this??

Here are all the errors I'm getting in the various logs.

Everything else comes up blue and nice :). Hope this helps you to help me.

Remotely manage the system and set the service to manual then remotely
reboot the system, on startup again remotely manage the system and now
review the system log and the services, in the services sort by startup
and see if there are any services not starting.

Bob

Remotly manage the server and set the DCOM Server Process Launcher
service to manual or disabled and this should correct your problem.

I would like to let you all know that I sorted out the problem I was having.

After doing some intense detective work, I realised that the version
number of the faulting programs and modules where different from other
Windows 2003 servers that I had on my network.

When I did a setup repair is did not remove all the system files of the
installation. This caused a versioning problem because the original CD
was replacing only those files deleted, while there were still some
system files that had been updated to SP1.

To solve this problem I slipstreamed a Windows 2003 SP1 bootable CD and
did a setup repair from that CD. This therefore replaced the system
files with SP1 versions which corresponded with those SP1 system files
that were not deleted.

Eureka! My server is backup and running nicely.

Thanks to all those you offered their assistance.
