Hi,

I recently installed a Windows Server 2003 (standard edition) as domain
controller.

When I boot the domain controller, it keeps hanging for several minutes on
"Preparing your networkconnections". After the delay it runs smootly.
When I check the eventviewer, there are two errors in the applicationlog
which keep coming back. (I have no idea if this is related to the slow boot)

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Userenv
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1030
Date: 21/07/2003
Time: 0:43:42
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: INSANITYDC
Description:
Windows cannot query for the list of Group Policy objects. Check the event
log for possible messages previously logged by the policy engine that
describes the reason for this.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Userenv
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1058
Date: 21/07/2003
Time: 0:43:42
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: INSANITYDC
Description:
Windows cannot access the file gpt.ini for GPO
CN={31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9},CN=Policies,CN=System,DC=insanity,
DC=org. The file must be present at the location
<\\insanity.org\sysvol\insanity.org\Policies\{31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04F
B984F9}\gpt.ini>. (Configuration information could not be read from the
domain controller, either because the machine is unavailable, or access has
been denied. ). Group Policy processing aborted.

I've already verified security permissions and they are set correctly on the
gpt.ini. (access has been denied)

Can anyone help me out on this? Any suggestions? Please advice...

Thanks in advance.

ThijsD.

You say that access has been denied on gpt.ini? Try running netdiag and
dcdiag on that domain controller looking for any errors. You can use the debug switch
to get more info about any particular tests that fail. --- Steve

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your help.

No, I mistyped. I meant that I've checked the security permissions were set
correctly on the gpt.ini, because the error 1058 in eventlog referred that
it could be an "Access is denied"-problem.
So, that's not the cause.

I've run both netdiag & dcdiag on the domaincontroller:
Netdiag gave me an error when starting about some entrypoint that is missing
in dnsapi.dll (This might be due to the fact I was using netdiag & dcdiag
from Windows 2000 and not 2003?)

Dcdiag gave me passed results overall except for this:
Starting test: Services
RPCLOCATOR Service is stopped on [INSANITYDC]
TrkWks Service is stopped on [INSANITYDC]
TrkSvr Service is stopped on [INSANITYDC]
......................... INSANITYDC failed test Services

Could this have something to do with it? Normally everything should be ok
with Services, I noticed no problems.
Do you think these errors in eventlog are related to the slow boot? (Hanging
on "Preparing your networkconnections" for several minutes)

Aarg, this is weird.

Cheers,

ThijsD.

Thanks!

I have not had first hand experience with that issue, but I would
double check that file and print sharing is enabled on your server based on
the Dcdiag error message. Any error messages in those tests could be
suspect. See if the Event ID searches from Event ID.net shed any light on
your problem - the DFS service seems to be an issue in both of those Event
Id's and it is dependant on file and print sharing. -- Steve
