Nick

I have two servers. one which is running Win 2003
standard server and one that is running win 2000. (both
are new installs. The win 2000 server will have exchange
2000 server installed. The win 2003 server will be a
domain controller with active directory.
I am trying to install exchange 2000 server on my win
2000 server but it will not install because it can't
connect to the active directory on the other server. Both
Servers are on the same domain and communicate with each
other just fine. Any ideas or can you point me to a
document that will give me some idea of how to get this
to work? thank you Nick

It sounds like your domain is OK, but some DNS SRV
records are missing. Namely the record that Identifies
the schema master. Install the support tools on the DC
from the W2k3 cd and type "dcdiag" at the command
prompt. This will verify that all necessary DNS records
are in existance. If the dcdiag reports all is well, do
a nslookup from the w2k server to make sure that it can
properly resolve the fully qualified DNS domain name for
the Domain controller. If dcdiag reports any errors,
restart the netlogon service on the dc and wait
approximately 10-15 minutes, restart the DNS service, and
then run dcdiag again to make sure the errors are gone.
You can also use nltest with the appropriate switches to
refresh dns registration. Also, make sure the the dns
zone for is accepting dynamic updates.

Kinda a shot in the dark here but I know you'll need to run both Forestprep
and Domainprep before installing Exchange 2000. Was that completed?
