I recently came across a Windows 2000 Pro disk that
someone gave me, and during installation it does not ask
for a key code. They told me that it was the last beta
version, before the final "consumer" version. He got it
from work, who got it from Microsoft, because they were
writing software drivers for Windows 2000 before it came
out. Is this true, and if so is it legal for me to use
this disk for installation? Also, could I use this disk to
install this version on more than one computer?

Hi,

I strongly recommend that if you want to run Windows 2000, you purchase a
released version from your local software vendor.

You'll probably find that some service packs will not install on that
version. Following that, some security patches will not install, either.
If this installation ever sees the Internet, you want those service
packs and security patches.

No, unless you're an authorized beta tester, you don't have a
legitimate license to use beta software. Further, the beta license
would have expired when Win2K went "gold."

Additionally, you'll very likely be unable to install any service
packs or hotfixes to repair problems with the OS. If you want to use
Win2K, go buy a legitimate license.
