Jamie

I recently tried to upgrade to windows XP, and now when
I start up I am told to choose Windows XP or Windows 2000.
I know that this is a dual boot, but I didn't want a dual
boot. Plus when I pick XP all I have is a receycle bin,
and when I try to access the C drive(or anything else for
that matter)it does absolutly nothing.

Can anyone tell me how to just have XP and have it work
properly?
Or should I just remove XP and try again?, and if so how
would I go about doing that?

I have no problem getting my hands dirty but I am kinda
new at some of this stuff. Thanks Jamie

To do a clean install, boot the Windows XP install CD-Rom. When you get to
the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions found. After you
delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again restart the pc
booting the CD-Rom to avoid unexpected drive letter assignments with your
new install.

Thanks for responding.

Now when I remove the NFTS and partitions will I have to
install my software again?????

Also I didn't understand the last part, "then again
restart the pc
booting the CD-Rom to avoid unexpected drive letter
assignments with your
new install." Did you mean restart the pc with the xp
disk in it????

Thanks Jamie

So at this point I should just erase everything, like you
said, and start over from scratch??????

Thanks again, Jamie

It's entirely up to you. From your original post it sounds like a new
install and you wanted to reinstall the OS again. If you simply want the
boot loader screen to go away, you can remove the option you no longer want
from boot.ini found in the root of the system partition.
Explorer|Tools|Folder Options|View, then radio button for "Show hidden files
and folders", then uncheck the box for "Hide protected operating system
files"

You should end up with something like this.

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect

Thanks again, sorry that I am so much trouble.

Let me just run the whole thing by one last time.

I have a pc that had Windows 2000 OS on it.
I wanted Windows XP, so I bought a Windows XP upgrade
disk, and installed it.

After that I don't know exactly what I did, but I ended
up with a screen at startup asking me what OS I want to
use, and when I pick Windows 2000 everything works but my
pc runs slow. When I pick XP the only thing that shows up
is the recycle bin, and when I go thru My Computer(in XP)
to the c drive nothing comes up.

So in conclusion what I want is to upgrade Windows 2000
to Windows XP without a dual boot and with XP working
properly.

Again sorry I am being so much trouble, and thanks for
your patience.

What you have done is actually create a Dual-boot system. You must have done
a clean install of XP into a separate partition instead of upgrading your
W2K.

What you see when you log on to XP is correct - the default XP desktop ONLY
has the recycle bin on it. Click on Start to see the menus.
