Hello,
I had NT4.0 and windows 95 (dual boot laptop), and
recently tried to upgrad to 2000, and it stopped working
in the middle of install, and now I cannot use the laptop,
as it dose not boot at all. I tried using my recovery disk
for 95, and it gives me the message" this disk was not
created for this version..." and is ignored. The same
problem with the NT 4.0 recovery disk. I am not sure how I
can restore my computer back to its original state, as the
CD rom drive is not accessible any more either. Any
suggestion anyone? thanks

Sincerely,

Julia

You can either recover your data from a parallel install or this link may
help. http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/ntfsdos.shtml

Then best to do a clean install. To do a clean install, either boot the
Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup disks. The set of four install disks
can be created from your Windows 2000 CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk
directory on the CD-Rom and execute makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe
(from 32 bit) and follow the prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

During Windows 2000 setup, at some point, will want to confirm the previous
operating system for the upgrade; at that point you'll simply insert the
qualified product install CD for it to verify. Then the install will
proceed.

Also given that your laptop was running NT4 and Windows 95 I assume it
is older. I would advise you check on the manafacture web site to make
certain it can run Windows 2000. Laptops generally have more
compatibility issues than desktops.
