Does anyone know why Windows would start and proceed to
the desktop an then not diplay any icons and not let you
get to the task bar?

Any recomendations appreciated.

John - there could be many reasons, some simpler than others. An example
might be a prolonged series of disk access retries on a problematic hard
drive - this can take many minutes of apparently frozen system before
either the access succeeds or W2k puts a failure message up. You might
let the system run for 10-15 minutes, then post back with any results
and a bit more useful info about the machine, how you installed W2k
(clean or upgrade and if the latter from what prior system), and whether
this installation has ever worked successfully. Hope this helps...

As someone else said there can be lots of causes for what you are
seeing. I would first try safe mode and see if that works. If it doesn't
then try safe mode command prompt only. If you can get to that mode then
you can run chkdsk and also possibly look at logs and other things. This
could be as simple as a shell or shartup program problem or more serious
like a problem reading from the drive.

This could be a damaged user profile as well. If you have another account on
this machine - try it.
Can you invoke TaskManager as Ctrl+Shift+Esc, kill explorer.exe and re-run
it?
