Help!

somehow i ended up in this situation:

my machine doesnt finish starting windows 2000 pro anymore. it hangs
at the black screen with "starting windows" just when the progress bar
has finished.
i tried all safe modes, i tried to boot from windows 2000 cd and it
hangs too, i did a system image restore with powerquest drive image 7
recovery environment, with the mbr restore option.this succesfully
restored and checked image does the same.
i tried memtest, which was ok.
i tried disabling all non boot necessary devices in the bios, it didnt
help.
Any clue?

History:

i was writing an e-mail response in outlook express when suddenly the
computer didnt respond anymore. nothing ( no ctrl alt del, nothing at
all) so i reset, and ended up in the situation described above.

Machine:

Asus A7N8X deluxe
2 x 512 mb kingston value 2700 ddr
Asus V9280 VS 128 mb graphics card
3 maxtor HDD ( 2x 80 gb, 1x 60gb diamond max plus 9 type.)
Lite on dvd drive
adaptec 2904 cd scsi card
1 usb device connected : wacom intuos 2 drawing tablet.
PS enermax 460 watt (should be enough).

in fact i did try a starting with a simple bootdisk with the
/safemode /sos option. It hangs at Mup.sys
I did remove alle scsi cards etc, disabled all integrated peripherals.
It keeps hanging at mup.sys.
I did replace the mup.sys via the recovery console, and that didnt
help too.

Is it possible that starting windows hangs on looking for something
which isnt there? (whatever that maybe)

Is it possible i have some virus and how can i detect that?
