I have a friend running Windows 2000. After a re-install, he cannot access
the internet, we cannot create a new dialup connection. MS's pages indicate
we need to reinstall 2000 and the latest SP. Since he cannot access the
internet, I have downloaded SP4 to my computer (not running Win 2000).
I assume I did correct by donwloading the Network version so that I can
install it onto his computer from a CD???

Before doing this check in add/remove win components that the neccessary
components have actually been installed.

Yes, that's correct.

Also, make absolutely sure you download the security updates from the
following page.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/current.aspx

I'd recommend that your select and install all the patches of severity
rating "critical" since service pack 4 was released.

Make sure you install these patches BEFORE you attach the machine to the
Internet. Also, install a firewall, such as the free one available from
www.zonealarm.com, in addition to a virus checker. A free one is available
from www.grisoft.com.

Hope this helps

I had a similar problem.... couldn't access network and couldn't create new
account. When I looked in "device manager" everything looked fine. I finally
ended up installing my network adapter DRIVER again. Worked for me...
