When I shut down windows 2000 I am getting a box showing saying 'closing
explorer.exe' This window stays there forever until I go 'end now'
and then 'sometimes' it closes down ok.
I haven't been using 'explorer' which seems strange, but I do of course
use it often at other times.
I have been 'cleaning' up the registry and have checked for spy ware and
viruses....all clear.
Maybe my registry cleanup has deleted something to do with 'explorer'???
If we get impatient (my wife) and it gets turned off then on next boot
up we get the non active desktop showing.
Hope I have explained enough for someone to suggest a cure
Thanks

My guess, most likely wrong, would be something hooked to explorer.exe: try
updating your virus and *ware definitions.

Also, just so you know, explorer.exe is not just IE, it is the shell windows
uses. It is your active desktop, it is your startmenu and bar, etc. Unless
you are modifying your boot to NOT use explorer.exe (very rarely done), you
use it every time on your computer.

Hey KG,

Explorer.Exe is the host EXE that is running all the time in Windows. In
most cases, you should be able to track this down by viewing the
Application and System Event Logs. In most cases, it could be something
that you have installed recently that has not cleaned up properly, or has
something stuck into memory. I have seen different applications do this.

Have you installed anything recently? You may try uninstalling it and see
if you still have the problem.
