I have the exact same problem on a Compaq Pro Wkst AP550 -
I applied SP4 to windows 2000 Professional and now all
network access - even to my corporate email - is painfully
slow. Unfortunately, I didn't archive before upgrading so
I can't back it out but I'm not even sure that would solve
it. I've tried upgrading and changing my network drivers
and even switching network cards without any change to
something else is going wrong. I have another machine
with SP4 that works great. I need a fix SOON!!!

Have you checked the duplex settings on you network card and switch? Make
sure both are set to either "auto detect" or 100/full. Do not mismatch the
settings and have the switch doing 100/full and your desktop running Auto or
half. This will cause serious network slowdown.

Yup, Duplex is "Auto Detect" - even my IS guys came by and
poked around to try and help me out. It looks, from other
posts, that this "slowness" is not just me. It's hit or
miss what SP4 is going to do to your system.

This wasn't an issue of me or anyone here messing with the
TCPIP settings - I think SP4 messed with them. Anyway,
that fix you posted worked so thank you very, very much.
I owe you big.

You're welcome. By "messing with" I meant it's likely someone/some
program was run to "optimize" the tcpip settings. But glad you're back
up to speed.

Following is the fix that I found out.
It has problem with the TCP/IP stack following is the
solution that worked for me.
Remove TCP/IP stack
Remove winsock and winsock2 registry settings under \local
machine\currentcontrolset
Reboot your pc and reinstall TCP/IP

Make sure you dont have any scripting loaded when your
computer boots up that touches any of the winsock registry
entries.
