I am the new Net Admin for a company running a W2K
network and whenever I try and load Windows updates to the
server it gives me a "Access Denied, Network Policy
settings prevent you from using Windows update to download
and install updates" Where do I need to go to shut off
this setting so I can download updates from the Windows
update site?
P.S. How can I check to see exactly which updates the
server has downloaded? I want to see if they are
downloaded automatically so I can see if the Sasser update
has been applied.

Probably there are set options for the windows update through domain
policies. There even can be Software Update Services in the domain and
clients to be configured to get the updates from there. Check on your
server - search for SUSAdmin subweb.

will disable / enable update .
How to configure automatic updates by using Group Policy

SUS is not installed on my server. I looked in
Automatic Updates in the Control Panel and it is checked
off, but the button underneath is on the Download Updates
Automatically and notify me when you want to install.
Doesn't that mean I still have to tell the server when to
install the updates??? Plus, I can't even change the
options for it because they are grayed out, even when I am
logged in as Administrator.

Exactly - these are set in the domain policy and are grayed on individual
computers.

Typically if you are getting this message I would look to
see if you have administrative rights on the server. If
you are not an admin you cannot run the Windows Update.
I would also check and see if there is a Local Group
Policy or Domain Police preventing Windows Update from
running.
