I have a network system setup with Windows 2000 Server. I have a computer with windows 98 that needs to communicate to a pc runs Windows 3.11. Both computers are connected to the network. I stablished communication between the two to a point that I can see whats in the Windows 98 computer from the Windows 3.11 computer. However, the windows 98 computer does not recognize the windows 3.11 computer. And I can't find the windows 3.11 in the network, so I cannot map a drive in my windows 98 computer to point to the Win3.11 comp. I am communicating using "netbeui" not TCPIP.

So, the question is: Is there any way that my Windows 2000 Server Network can recognize my Windows 3.11 computer?

Any help or clue will be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks,

Eve.

Eve,

The only way that I have found is open explorer, goto Tools, Map
Network Drive, and
force a mapping by typing \\win311pcname\sharename rather than
browsing for it. This has worked for me.

Also, you can use tcp/ip if you disable a small range of ip's from
dhcp and assign a static ip from within to the Win311 pc. This
makes forced mapping easier and more stable.

Is the Win98 PC running NetBeui? Can it ping the Win3.11 PC?

P.S. It is Windows for Workgroups, not Workers.

If my memory serves me right, NetBEUI is great for local or home networks setup as peer-to-peer, but the protocol is not routable. Are you using routers on this network? If so, add a common protocol like TCP/IP.

Also note that Windows XP no longer supports NetBEUI.
