I have a Windows 2000 server that reboots every 5 to 20
minutes. I have scanned for viruses, removed recent
updates, and searched for solutions at the MS site. I
have found nothing that will fix the problem. Computer
worked fine until one week ago (9/12/2003. I replaced hot
swap drives from an identical computer and the computer
works fine. The problem seems to be when Windows boots
up. Nothing in the Event log indicates what is failing or
causing the restart. Sometimes the server will go for 5
hours without a reboot, then it reboots and the 5 to 20
minute cycle begins again. Any ideas?

Have you tested your power supply and or memory chips. Those are the 2 most
likely candidates.

I seem to remember that sometimes viruses will shut down a
computer as they attack it. One recnent virus, blaster I
think does that too. We had trouble with one server 2
years ago under code red virus where it would shut it self
down when under attack although the worm failed to install
itself. It was under attack every 10 to 20 minutes from
other servers external to our network. Make sure all your
security patches and virus def are up to date. If you can
isolate it from the network when the shutdown cycle is
occuring, this might tell you whether the shutdown is
internally triggered or some external influence.

ALso, there is a setting on Advanced tab of System
Properties, Performance Options on what to do in a memory
dump. Reboot is an option. Try turning that off if it is
on. That way you'll get a blue screen and some code to
read - or you can just go to the dump file log to see if
anything is there.
