HOW DO I CONNECT A LAPTOP WITH XP HOME TO A WINDOWS 2000
SERVER?

Please lose the caps - it's considered yelling, is extremely rude and makes
your posts incredibly hard to read.

The simple answer is you don't. Home is not designed to - nor capable of -
joining a domain. Your only choice is to upgrade to Pro.

Greetings --

Do you have them both in the same workgroup? Are you using the
same network protocol on both machines? Are you connecting the two
machines directly via a cross-over cable, or is there a hub. switch,
or router in the mix? Have you disabled WinXP's built-in firewall on
the internal LAN connection? There are literally dozens of things
that could be causing your problem; how about providing a little
information about your network, so we have something to work with?

BRUCE!! I'm surprised at you! ;o) The simple answer is - as you should well
know - is that HOME cannot join a domain.

Home can't JOIN a domain. But, it can access Domain resources

And exactly _where_ did the OP mention that he had a domain? ;-}
Besides, you and another respondent had already told him that; I just
thought I'd cover the other possibilities.

Well, as a peer to peer network doesn't have a server, I would have thought
it was pretty obvious.

A peer-to-peer network is a network of PCs offering File/Print/etc
services to each other.

Any machine offering services is a server!
