Since we have installed Windows 2000 on our server we have had many problems
connecting to it with our 98 and xp machines. When we do get connected it
seems to loose the connection if idle for a time. We did not have these
connection problems with NT; the only difference with the upgrade to 2000 is
using DHCP with a switch. We have also added an internet connection with
DSL. Timeouts? It appears to be worse with the recent updates. Can anybody
give me any suggestions?

DHCP does have a timeout setting whereas the machine will have to release
and renew its IP address. Make sure that the timeout setting on your DHCP
server is not set too low.

The individual settings are set to "never" release. Is there an all around
place to set the timeout.

How many nics in the server? Got DNS, DHCP and WINS installed on the server?
Does an ipconfig/all from the client show that everything is pointing to
your server-IP?

From the client, open a commandprompt and type in ipconfig/all
If you add >ip.txt it will flow in a textfile which you can copy and paste
here.

You'll have to change some things.

On the servernic for your internalnetwork you should only have the IP (I
guess it is 192.168.0.4 or 192.168.0.1) and no gateway. DNS should point to
your server-IP (192.168.0.4 or 192.168.0.1).

The external nic should be in a different IP-scheme.
On the external nic you should point the gateway to your router-IP and also
have the DNS to your server-IP.
In DNS-server you should add the ISP-DNS-numbers in the forwarders
(207.217.....).
In DHPC-server you'll have to make sure that the options are 003 Router,
server-IP, 006 DNS server-IP, 044 server-IP, 046 0x8.
Put the nics on the workstations to obtain an IP from DHCP automatically as
well as obtain DNS automatically.

Are you using RRAS? In that case make sure you do the regedits in 292822.

Let me know how you're getting on.
