Windows 2000 Routing issue?

I need some help with a machine I'm working on.
The user is using Lotus notes and a dial up entry to connect to
another business's network.
As soon as the connection is established, the user loses access to the
local Exchange server.

Details as follows.

Workstation local IP
192.168.1.13

Exchange / Win2k server IP
192.168.1.1
(runs DNS and DHCP also)

Local gateway
192.168.1.254
(is also a DNS server, it's a hardware DSL router (very small
business)

External IP is being assigned to Dial up Adapter.

External Company does have a DNS server (1 & 2)
External Company does have a gateway

All I really need is this user to be able to access their intranet and
Lotus Notes on this other network.

Is it the route command I need to play with?
I've fiddled with the Gateway on the workstation, changed the dial up
gateway to still be the local gateway, but this didn't work.

Machine is running Win2k SP2 fully patched
(windowsupdate.microsoft.com)

Any suggestions?

The ouput of the ROUTE PRINT command before and after connection would
be useful.

1)
Does the external company have a 192.168.1.0/24 network also?

2)
When connected to the external company, the workstation could be getting
their DNS server settings and overwrite the current settings. When
connected, can you still resolve the address of your exchange server?
