You need to get a file called "msconfig.exe" from a Windows XP machine.
Copy it to stiffy and bring it to this machine and then run it and follow
the steps below:
Basically it's trial and elimination until you determine the service or item
that is causing your problem. Then disable it using the msconfig.
Steps:
1.. Save the msconfig file to the desktop of the machine giving the
problem. Rename the file to msconfig.exe.
2.. Double-click the msconfig.exe file.
3.. Under the General tab, select Selective Startup.
4.. Remove the ticks from Process System.ini File; Process Win.ini file
and Load Startup Items.
5.. Click the Services tab (at the top right).
6.. Insert a tick in "Hide all Microsoft Services" and remove the ticks
from the remaining items.
7.. Click Apply, click Close and select to Restart.
8.. Test to see if the problem still occurs.
· If not, continue with the steps below in order to identify the
problem item and let me know what it is.
· If the problem still occurs, please work through the steps further
down under the "Microsoft Service" heading.
9.. Run msconfig
10.. On the General tab, click to select the Process SYSTEM.INI File check
box, click OK, and then click Restart to restart the computer. If the
problem occurs, the issue is with an entry in your System.ini file. If the
problem does not continue to occur, repeat this step for the Process WIN.INI
File, Load Startup Items, and Load System Services (if appropriate) check
boxes (one at a time) until the problem occurs. After the problem occurs,
the last item that you selected is the item in which the problem is
occurring.
Once you have identified the problem item (SYSTEM.INI; WIN.INI; Services or
Startup items), work through the appropriate tab using the same process of
trial and elimination until you have identified the problem. Once you have
done so, please let me know.
Microsoft Services
If a clean-boot did not resolve the problem, the issue may lie with one of
the Microsoft Services. In this case, please work through the steps below.
1.. Open msconfig.
2.. Under the General tab, select Selective Startup.
3.. Remove the tick from Process System Services.
4.. Click Apply, click Close and select to Restart.
5.. Test to see if the problem occurs.
a.. If the problem still occurs, please let me know.
b.. If the problem does not occur, continue with the steps below.
6.. Work through the System Services under the Services tab, enabling one
or a few at a time, using a process of trial and elimination, and testing
each time after enabling until you have identified the problem item.
