I've got a windows 2000 prof standalone machine with a
seagate external backup drive. when i try to run a manual
backup, it backs up the files, and while starting to
verify data, coming up with an error message:
"Error: An inconsistency was encountered on the requested
media". Tried with a brand new tape, but still the same
error. unless i get the manual backup working, automatic
scheduling wouldn't work either.
I've applied the latest service packs and updates. no
help.
any solutions, please.
thanks

Hello,
Take a look at Knowledge Base article 263480:

This article indicates the error may occur when your tape drive is connected
to the same channel as a CD-Rom device.

From that article:

=====

Because backup verification operations are read only, backup performs I/O
requests to the tape drive more often and is the reason Plug and Play
surprise removal error messages may be displayed when Autorun is enabled.
This may result in Ntbackup reporting the following message during a
verification operation in the Backup report:

Error: An inconsistency was encountered on the requested media.

To improve backup performance and eliminate possible Plug and Play surprise
removal error messages, use one of the following workarounds:

- Turn off the Autorun feature by using the steps in the following Microsoft
Knowledge Base article:

- Move the tape drive or CD-ROM so that these two devices are located on
separate IDE controllers.

- Purchase a SCSI-based tape drive and controller listed on the Windows 2000
Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) to enhance reliability and performance of
your backups.
