I have two P4 mb's with onboard lan and connected them together
with a cat5e crossover cable. Have left the TCP/IP properties
as to obtain an IP address and obtain DNS address automatically.
Under Advanced settings, DHCP is enabled, WINS tab, enable LMHOSTS
lookup is checked and Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP is also checked.
Computers have different name and same workgroups name, and when
checking "computers nearest me, says workgroup is not accessible,
The network path was not found. Any ideas please, many thanks...

I had the same problem with the same settings until I found out that I
didn't have the Netbeui protocol installed. You may want to check that.

You need to assign static IP addresses on both pc's and have them in the
same subnet (mask).
For example, you can assign one of them:
IP Address: 10.10.10.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
The other one:
Ip Address: 10.10.10.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Unless you have a DHCP server on your network, you can't set it up to assign
ip automatically.
The alternative is to not use IP and use netbeui. This will work if you do
not have a router in the middle.

Windows 2000 Pro doesn't come with a DHCP Server - the Server Editions do.
If you don't have a DSL/Cable router running DHCP then you need to configure
IP addresses manually as shown above or use a different network transport
protocol than TCP/IP.
