WINDOWS 2000 PROFESSIONAL WILL NOT DETECT MY CABLE MODEM
AND I CAN'T SEEM TO GET IT TO LOAD FROM CD EITHER. WHAT
MIGHT BE CAUSING THIS AND HOW DO I RESOLVE IT?

Is this an external modem? If so, Windows won't bother detecting
devices not part of your system. It needs to detect the network card
(which connects to the cable modem). Does the Network applet show a LAN
connectoid? Does Device Manager show the network card?

Not strictly true. A modem connected via a COM port will be detected.

I'm pretty sure the original poster was talking about a *cable* modem.
Other than a NIC, what other port type do cable modems connect to? Even
for an internal cable modem, doesn't it look like a NIC on the bus side?

Agreed.

My cable modem, like many other models, offers the options of
Ethernet or USB connections to the PC. When it's attached via USB,
the OS detects it automatically, and asks for the location from which
to install the drivers.

Ah, thanks for the input. I forgot about USB-attached modems.
