Windows 2000 machines hang at startup until you unplug network cable

All of the W2000Pro and XP Pro machines hang at startup
until you unplug the network cable...looking at the
switch none of these machines show up on the network yet
they still can access the Internet and File Server after
you reconnect the cable...doesn'r affect Win 98
machines...need help fast
