Windows 2000 is using 100% of my CPU

Can someone help me please?

I have recently formatted my PC. My version of Windows 2000 suddenly
started turning itself off and then wouldn't reboot or let me repair the
installation as it the registy files could not be copied accross. After
having some trouble getting Windows 2000 back onto my system I now have it
back up and running on an NFTS partion, i have also somehow managed to
install a copy of XP on my system as well so when I boot up I get the option
to start up either one- my first question is is this causing the CPU usage to
go through the roof whenever I ask the computer to do something?

If not then I am at a loss- I am not even using half of my memory - but
whenever the internet or an appication starts then everything grinds to a
halt! I have tried all of the following:
1) Rebooted in safe mode and checked for spyware- nothing
2) Checked for visuses- nothing
3) Checked my services and disabled those that I could
4) tidyed up the hard drive of all non-essential files- temp internet files,
cookies etc.

The computer is still running v slowly- it is becomming very frustrating as
before the format and reinstall it was fine.

Please can someone help I'd be very very grateful.

Thanks
James

P.S. If anyone can tell me how to get that copy of XP off my partition that
would be great!!

You must launch the Task Manager and check which program
consumes most of your CPU resources.

WinXP is probably installed in C:\Windows. Rename this folder
to C:\WinXP.old, then delete it after one week if all is well.

Check Event Viewer for errors. Check Device Manager for error codes and or
non-starting devices. You can use Task Manager and or Performance Monitor to
see what process is consuming the mem/ cpu.

Pegasus,

There are quite a rew process that occupy a lot of my CPU resource i think
however it will not let me shut them down

What do I do if I uncover error codes and none starting devices? As you can
probably tell i am slightly at the end of my tether with this one!!

Your claim is at variance with my own experience. Whenever
I have seen a fully loaded CPU then it was because of one or
at most two bad processes. Click on the "Processes" tab,
then on the CPU column header (perhaps twice) until the most
CPU intensive process floats to the top. What is it?

I've had a look Firefox is (when running at 70k) then svchost at 8 (i have 3
running at incidents at differnet usages). I seem to have a clutch of
processes that I can't identify all runng between 5 and 8- there are about 7
of them.

BTW i stopped using IE and started using Firefox becuase the problem was
worse with IE. BAsically whenever I start any application my system grinds
to a halt and the CPU jumps. When running the internet it peaks at 100% then
jumps from 0 to 60 very frequently!

What's important is the % CPU usage, not the memory usage.
What exactly do you mean with "runng between 5 and 8"???

By the way, it is not a good idea to start a second thread
on the same subject as an existing open thread. It leads to
duplication of effort and tends to discourage respondents.
Much better to work thorougly on the original thread.

Sorry- am new to this- I am now at work and therefore can't give you exact
numbers. I'll get back to you when I am at home- I was looking at the wrong
numbers.

Post them!
