I have a Compaq Laptop running Windows 98. I want to install 2000. I tried
both Upgrade and fresh instal, but each time I get the following message "Can
not read from or write to Drive C" and then the installation shuts down.

Any ideas on why this can be happening and what I can do to get around it?

At what point in the installation process do you get the message?

Follow the steps in Knowledge Base article 229716 Description of the Windows
2000 Recovery Console (http://support.microsoft.com/?id=229716) to boot to
the Recovery Console. At the command prompt, enter "chkdsk c: /r" without
the quotation marks. Once it completes, if it finds and fixes errors,
immediately run "chkdsk c: /p". Repeat this command until Chkdsk reports no
errors. Once complete, try to install again.

See the referenced Knowledge Base article for descriptions of the /R and /P
switches for Chkdsk in Recovery Console.
